If you are pregnant, one question matters more than any other, and it is the one most often left until late: where can this consultant actually deliver your baby?
Delivery privileges are separate from clinic affiliation
A consultant seeing you at a clinic does not automatically have admitting rights at the hospital you have in mind. Confirm the specific hospital early, in writing if you can. This is the single most common surprise for expectant parents in the UAE, and it is discovered far too often in the third trimester, when changing consultant is disruptive.
Questions for antenatal care
- What is their caesarean rate, and in what circumstances would they recommend one?
- What is their approach to induction, and to pain relief including epidural availability overnight?
- Who covers deliveries when they are unavailable — and will you meet that person beforehand?
- How many antenatal visits are included, and what exactly does the package cover: scans, bloods, the delivery itself, the postnatal check?
- What is the plan if you go past your due date?
None of these are awkward questions. A consultant who answers them plainly is telling you how they practise.
For gynaecology rather than obstetrics
For fibroids, endometriosis, heavy bleeding or pelvic pain, ask whether the procedure can be done laparoscopically rather than open, how many the surgeon performs each year, and what the non-surgical options are. For endometriosis in particular, ask who else is involved — it is frequently managed better by a team than by one clinician.
Fertility
Fertility treatment is a distinct sub-specialty. If that is your reason for booking, ask whether the consultant practises it regularly or refers on, and ask what the investigation sequence looks like before any treatment is proposed.
