Gastroenterologists assess symptoms such as persistent heartburn, abdominal pain, changes in bowel habit and unexplained weight loss, and many perform endoscopic procedures including gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
Choosing a specialist
If you are likely to need an endoscopy, ask whether the gastroenterologist performs it themselves and where, and what sedation is used. Ask how results and any biopsy findings will be explained to you and how long they usually take. Bring a list of current medicines, as some need to be paused before a procedure.
