The most valuable thing a paediatrician offers is having seen your child before. A doctor following their growth pattern spots a deviation that a first consultation simply cannot.
Ask about access before anything else
- Can you see the same doctor each visit, or whoever is on rota that day?
- What happens with an urgent concern on a Friday evening or during a holiday?
- Is there a way to ask a short question without booking a full appointment?
- How far ahead do routine appointments book — days, or weeks?
Continuity and access matter more in paediatrics than the reputation of any individual name, because most of what you will actually use a paediatrician for is ordinary and time-sensitive.
Immunisation records
Confirm the clinic follows the UAE national immunisation schedule and can issue a record card accepted by nurseries and schools. If you have moved from another country, ask early how your existing records map onto the local schedule. Discovering a gap at school enrolment is considerably worse than discovering it now, and catch-up schedules take time.
If your child has a chronic condition
Ask which hospital the paediatrician admits to, and whether they coordinate with the relevant sub-specialist — paediatric cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, respiratory — or expect you to manage that yourself. Coordination is the difference between one clinician holding the whole picture and you carrying notes between three.
Language
Ask which languages the doctor and the nursing staff speak. A child describing symptoms in their own language gives better information than a parent translating, and in a multilingual population this is a practical consideration rather than a preference.
A paediatrician who tells you a visit was unnecessary, or who declines to prescribe antibiotics for a viral illness, is demonstrating judgement. Treat it as a good sign.
